Analysis of microorganisms

The German Food and Feed Code (LFGB) forms the legal basis for the production, transport, storage, and sale of food and feed, consumer goods, and cosmetics. The aim is to protect the health of consumers and to protect them from deception within traffic or when consuming unsuitable food.

Against this background, raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products are examined for undesired bacterial pathogens. The procedures are defined in the official test methods §64 or international DIN EN ISO standards. CONGEN ServiceLab offers the following analyses:

The analysis comprises the following steps:


You send a representative part of the sample material to our service laboratory. Information on necessary sample quantities, sampling, and shipping can be found in our information sheet for microbiological samples.

Enrichment, Processing and Verification


Depending on the analyte, the sample is enriched in a suitable medium at defined temperatures. Appropriate control samples of the medium used and the sample preparation at different points in time allow false-positive results to be checked. 1 ml of the enriched sample is extracted in duplicate.

DNA and RNA Extraction

Depending on the matrix to be examined, sample-specific preparation and DNA or RNA extraction are performed in duplicate. The extraction method used is checked by means of the following checks:

  • Negative extraction control: as an indication of buffer contamination or carry over during extraction
  • The positive extraction control: as proof of the functionality of the method used, this is carried out in the form of a lot-dependent process control.
Qualitative Nucleic Acid Detection

In qualitative procedures, negative, inhibition, and positive controls are routinely used. If the controls show the expected results, you will receive a test report with the corresponding results and the system-specific detection limit. Please note that the determination is not matrix-specific.
